This is where customs and border protection officers come in. The CBP officers’ main job is to prevent the entry of terrorists and weapons of mass destruction into the country. Aspiring officers should expect to perform the following duties:

1. Facilitate the Orderly Entry of People In and Out of the Country at International Airports
2. Inspect Luggage of People Entering and Leaving the Country at International Airports
3. Inspect Ships Entering and Leaving the Country at Seaports
4. Facilitate the Orderly Entry and Exit of Cruise Passengers
5. Conduct Inspection of Cargo Entering and Leaving the Country at Airports
6. Inspect Commercial Trucks and Passenger Cars Leaving and Entering the Country at Border Crossings
7. Check People Entering and Leaving the Country at Border Crossings
8. Etc.

A CBP officer should be personable. As people arrive into the country, it would be nice to have a smile on your face and welcome them, especially new immigrants.

But this is a serious job that requires your attention to detail. You cannot afford to make a mistake. Such mistake can mean allowing the wrong people into the country.

How to Become Customs and Protection Officer:
To become a CBP officer, you need 4 years of college or equivalent. You are also required to be less than 37 years old. You will have to pass a written exam and a physically fitness test. You also must pass a background check and drug test.

Customs and border protection officers get complete training. You attend the US Customs and Border Protection Academy located at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, Georgia. The training will last for 15 weeks and is paid. You will learn inspection techniques and how to handle firearm.

Those that will be posted to Puerto Rico, Miami, or the Southwest border must pass a Spanish language test. Otherwise, you will be required to undergo additional 6 weeks of Spanish language training.

Customs and Protection Officer Salary:
CBP officers who complete all the required training can expect to be rewarded with good pay. The average salary is $83,000 per year. This pay will continue to increase as you gain more experience and years of service.

Customs and Protection Officer School:
